What are the symptoms of acromegaly?

Acromegaly can affect different people in different ways, with a wide range of potential symptoms and associated health problems.1-3 These may gradually develop over many years, sometimes making it difficult to notice changes.

Acromegaly symptoms and related health issues may include:1-3

Headaches, ‘Pins and needles’, Excessive sweating, Tiredness or Fatigue, Joint pain, Eyesight problems

Changing facial features (e.g. more prominent jawline, nose broadening, gaps between teeth; enlarged lips, brow and tongue)

Breathing problems (e.g. hard to breathe deeply, snoring, sleep apnoea)

Gut problems (growths called polyps that may become cancerous)

Deepening voice

Heart and circulation problems (e.g. high blood pressure, palpitations)

Problems with sugar and fat levels in the blood

Enlarged hands (rings may no longer fit)

Problems maintaining an erection, menstrual disturbances (changes to ‘monthly period’)

Enlarged feet (shoes may no longer fit)

If you think you may have acromegaly but are currently undiagnosed, it is important to see your doctor as soon as possible, so that your symptoms can be investigated. If you have been diagnosed with acromegaly, be sure to tell your doctor about any new or changing symptoms, so that your treatment can be adjusted as needed.
